Job Description: Insurance Compliance Specialist & In-House Counsel Position Title: Insurance Compliance Specialist & In-House Counsel Location: [London / Bristol] Reporting To: [CEO] Employment Type: [Full-Time / Permanent] Salary & Benefits: [£65,000 - £125,000 depending on experience - includes Healthcare and Pension - 30 days holiday] Role Overview: We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to join our team as an Insurance Compliance Specialist & In-House Counsel.
This dual-role position requires a deep understanding of UK insurance regulations, payments frameworks, and the legal landscape.
The successful candidate will provide strategic compliance oversight, legal advice, and operational support across regulatory compliance, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and litigation.
Key Responsibilities: Insurance Compliance: Ensure the company’s adherence to UK insurance regulatory requirements, including FCA regulations, Solvency II, and other applicable standards.
Oversee the implementation and monitoring of compliance frameworks and policies across the business.
Act as the primary liaison with regulators, including preparing and submitting required documentation and reports.
Provide compliance guidance for underwriting, claims handling, and intermediary activities.
Advise on and monitor payment systems compliance, including PSD2 and other relevant financial services regulations.
In-House Counsel Duties: Provide legal advice on corporate governance, contracts, insurance products, and other operational matters.
Draft, review, and negotiate contracts with insurers, reinsurers, brokers, and other third parties.
Support the business in litigation matters, including managing external counsel and representing the company’s interests in disputes.
Provide strategic legal advice on potential risks, emerging regulations, and industry trends.
Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A): Advise on legal aspects of mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures, including conducting due diligence and drafting transaction documents.
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to execute M&A strategies and ensure legal and regulatory compliance throughout the process.
Identify and mitigate risks associated with acquisitions, investments, and corporate restructuring.
General Responsibilities: Work closely with senior leadership to support strategic initiatives, including business expansion and new product launches.
Deliver training and guidance to staff on compliance and legal issues.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and industry best practices.
Key Skills & Experience: Expertise in UK Insurance Regulation: Deep understanding of FCA rules, Solvency II, IDD, GDPR, and other relevant frameworks.
Payments Regulation Knowledge: Familiarity with PSD2 and financial services compliance requirements.
Legal Expertise: Qualified solicitor or barrister in England and Wales with significant experience in commercial law, insurance law, and regulatory compliance.
M&A Experience: Proven ability to manage legal aspects of transactions, including due diligence, structuring, and negotiation.
Litigation Skills: Strong background in dispute resolution, including managing and mitigating litigation risks.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex regulations and provide pragmatic advice.
Exceptional communication skills, capable of building relationships with regulators, external counsel, and internal stakeholders.
Qualifications: Qualified solicitor or barrister (England & Wales).
Minimum 5+ years of post-qualification experience in insurance, compliance, or a related field.
Proven track record of working in-house within the insurance sector or at a leading law firm with insurance clients.
Additional certifications in compliance, such as ICA or CII qualifications, are advantageous.
