The Role
Headland Archaeology work on a wide range of exciting archaeological projects of all scales throughout the UK. The role of the survey team is to ensure the smooth flow of spatial data through the company from data capture to Archive. We build systems, promote skills and provide resources to make this happen. The Survey Officer will play an integral part in implementing Headland’s survey strategy across the business.
You will be self-driven with a positive outlook and good understanding of British Archaeology. You will be experienced in site surveying in archaeology and capable of overseeing these activities on several field projects at the same time. You will be a good team worker who can promote new ideas and new ways of working and help our team to deliver projects to programme and to budget.
You will be responsible for providing survey support to our archaeological sites. This includes the application of procedures; training and field support; equipment care and logistics; data security and processing; quality assurance and data presentation. You will be expected to work as part of a small team of skilled technical staff and project-based assistants and provide hands-on site support where extra resources or advanced recording techniques are required. The work will be primarily field-based and will involve good organisation and a willingness to travel. Your work will be managed and supported by the Senior Survey Officer.

Key Responsibilities Project Work
Carrying out routine survey work
Processing survey and site data as required
Presenting survey and site data to the requirements of the Contracting division
Application of surveying and data management procedures
Ensuring survey and site data is secure, and regularly transferred between sites and offices
Carrying out specialist survey work when required Development and Support
Delivering survey, data management and field recording training
Delivering survey and data management technical support
Contributing to research and development into new or alternate survey and data management methods and processes People
Communicate regularly with the Technical Services Manager
Liasing with the Site Lead about survey requirements
Managing a small team of dedicated Survey Supervisors
Supporting the other activities of the department Safety, Health, Environment and Quality Responding quickly to survey and site data quality issues with feedback and other suitable measures Equipment
Care for and provide logistics support for our survey equipment fleet, including hire equipment
Substantial GPS and total station surveying experience
Sound understanding of archaeological recording; data tidying and presentation.
Ability to troubleshoot technical survey issues and challenging working conditions
Survey data processing using appropriate software
Advanced use of Microsoft Office packages, particularly Excel
Clear, friendly communication in person, phone, email or messaging
Full clean UK driving licence
